Wow, where did 2017 go? I know I’m not alone when I say that this was a wild and crazy 2017 for oh so many reasons, and one that simply got away from many of us. As 316Press looks ahead to set a new direction, one sure sign that the new year upon us…in a BIG way…is the annual NAMM Show. The 2018 Winter NAMM Show promises to be bigger and better than ever as it takes over Anaheim, California and the newly remodeled Anaheim Convention Center. The updates include a brand new wing with 20% additional exhibit space, more parking spaces and more. While this is an industry only show, each year we’ve tried to bring some highlights and news of cool new gear you might be looking for. This year we will also be looking out for some items that don’t break the budget. Items that should be accessible for most wether you are a solo musician or a worship band in need of some updates or accessories. Don’t worry, we’ll still try to highlight some of those dream-worthy items that give us thoughts of ‘one of these days’. In another post, we’ll talk about a few entertainment options open for all, but for now let’s see some of the new gear and announcements we’ve already seen…(don’t miss some of the photos below the summaries)

Speaking of our friends at Kanile`a, we recently had an amazing opportunity to sit with a Hawaiian music legend, the one and only Led Kaapana, in an intimate setting of only about 30 people. It was a night of stories and amazing music from this legendary artist. The man is about as warm and friendly and full of aloha and love as you can imagine. Multiple awards, sells out massive stadium performances and we got the honor to sit in the (small) Kanile`a showroom floor. Wow! Check out this video clip posted on the YouTube channel. We promise there is more video to come either directly or through the Kanile`a social outlets. On a tech note, this is video straight form the incredible Fuji X-T2 and the 14mm/2.8. No color grading applied. No skill behind the camera either. Thank you for amazing gear now days! Video novice here for sure, but the moment was magical nonetheless.
Ruach Music Ltd with their NAMM debut. Cajons, Stompboxes, Handmade guitars and basses, Peadalboards and Effects Pedals
Rauch Music may be new to NAMM, but not to the space. With product line built for drummer to guitar player, this company crafts handmade pedalboards, a line of cajons, effects pedals and now electric and bass guitars. We took a quick look at their effects pedals on the website, and this is something we will try to dig into a bit deeper at the show. Our in-house contributor Clark Wilson is great at evaluating effects pedals and applying use cases for the worship musician and more.
G7th Heritage capo updates
G7th is a brand of capo we’ve talked about here before. Well made, highly functional and backed by a great team, G7th has updated its popular Heritage capo. On top of a few technical changes (such as making the adjustment knob shorter so it can be left behind the nut in a guitar case), the ART found in the Heritage has been finely honed to perfection. “We’ve worked through various iterations of the ART design, but we’re absolutely delighted with where we are now. It’s so much more convenient than having to remember which capo matches which guitar radius, or messing around with changing inserts. You get convenience and the maximum tuning stability using the minimum tension necessary, all in a stunningly beautiful and lightweight capo!” Noel Sheehan, G7th Managing Director
The Growling Sax
A new entry to the professional saxophone market, The Growling Sax is introducing an outstanding set of instruments in their NAMM debut. We’ll get some photos added after we have a chance to visit them at the booth it appears that The Growling Sax is out to make an impression in the woodwind space. Of particular interest to readers here at 316Press, Founder Melvin Quinones is building a team consisting mostly or artists in the CCM/Gospel space.
The Growling Sax (TGS) initial offering was the H-1110 Series which had glowing reviews. This has led some to ask, why create another professional series? TGS considers the Uprise Series more like a masters instrument. “We wanted to offer an instrument that will satisfy the most demanding of musicians and musicianship.” Melvin Quinones, CEO. These instruments are handmade in their factory in Taiwan using the latest state-of-the-art processes and technologies and have amazing sound, ergonomics, and intonation.
Rat introduces new Rat Tail distortion cable.
Here’s something a bit different, at least from what I’ve seen. How about a guitar cable with built-in distortion circuitry? RAT FX, known for its world-class distortion pedals, enters into the cable market with its first RAT Tail distortion cable at NAMM 2018. The new RAT Tail distortion cable offers guitarists a new way of achieving some of the effects of the Vintage RAT distortion pedals, as this cable is built using the same clipping diodes that drive Vintage RAT pedals’ signature distortion tones. With two built-in ranges of distortion circuitry directly selectable on the connector, guitarists can shift seamlessly between settings with the connector’s easily accessible dial, without missing a beat. The RAT Tail distortion cable comes equipped with three settings, including true bypass, distortion overdrive with unity gain and distortion overdrive (+3dB of gain).
So that is only a few of the thousands of products that will be revealed at the massive NAMM 2018 show in Anaheim! Stand-by for more updates and news in upcoming posts.
